February is a time to raise awareness about one of the most challenging cancers affecting women.
Each year in Australia around 1,900 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In most cases the cancer will be diagnosed at an advanced stage, where it is very difficult to treat. That’s why early detection is so important.
Know the Symptoms
Ovarian cancer symptoms can be vague, subtle and persistent. Watch for:
- Ongoing bloating or abdominal swelling
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Feeling full quickly or difficulty eating
- Urinary urgency or frequency
- Unexplained fatigue
- Changes in bowel habits
It can happen at any age but most frequently occurs after menopause.
You know your body better than anyone else so if things don’t feel right, we encourage you to come and see one of your GPs at Clarity Medical for advice.
There Is No Routine Screening Test
Unlike cervical cancer (with Pap smears) or breast cancer (with mammograms), there is currently no reliable screening test for ovarian cancer in women without symptoms.
That’s why listening to your body and having a GP who listens to you matters so much.
If you’ve been putting off a check-up, now is the perfect time to prioritise yourself. Make an appointment with with your GP in St Kilda East today.
